Cole Field House
The University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland
Rejuvenating The Terrapins’ Indoor Practice Facility
Kaempf & Harris undertook phase one of the Cole Field House renovations in April 2016 and completed it in August 2017. This project will take place in 3 phases transforming the building into a 356,000 square foot facility.
The renovations will turn Cole Field House into one of the largest NCAA indoor facilities in the country. Kaempf & Harris coordinated with a design team to create an innovative design for the facility. This design included two 60,000 CFM air rotation units that will cycle indoor air with the help of roof mounted fans.
The restricted ceiling space created unique challenges for the Kaempf & Harris team. The team had to install the ductwork and piping to serve the perimeter offices while leaving space for the second phase of renovations.
Now, Kaempf & Harris will be turning their attention to phase two of the renovations.

Nova Higher Education Center
Sterling, Virginia
Northern Virginia Community College Adds Higher Ed Center
To help further establish itself as a progressive institution, Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) contracted with Sigal Construction, Warner Mechanical and Kaempf & Harris to build a new Higher Education Center building on campus.
The new three-story building was designed for science, technology and arts education, including general classroom space, common areas and a sound studio. NOVA also planned on applying for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification upon completion of the project.
With a tight deadline to finish the project before classes in the new building started, Kaempf & Harris worked around student schedules, reduced its noise levels to avoid classroom interruptions and met LEED accreditation requirements to deliver the HVAC portion of the build on time and within budget. The new building won LEED Silver accreditation.
